The
fighting bluefish certainly needs no introduction in these parts.
Pound for pound they're one of the scrappiest fish at sea. No
doubt a reason why they're considered the East Coast's most popular
game fish. Bluefish can be found just about anywhere there's saltwater.
But
along Maryland's coast, the really big "chopper" blues will typically
be found 5-25 miles out in the ocean. Here fishermen enjoy the
true versatility of these gamefish as they pursue them using any
of a variety of techniques and tactics including trolling, chumming,
bottom fishing, jigging, kite fishing, plugging, and fly casting.
Throughout
the summer, these same near shore waters also become home-sweet-home
to schools of king and Spanish mackerel, false albacore, dolphin,
Atlantic and oceanic bonito. This smorgasbord of fish can make
for some very enjoyable trolling over and around the humps and
drop-offs where they congregate. Consider it "a slightly scaled
down version of big game fishing."
