Thursday 6:30 AM:
Last night's captain's meeting went great. We didn't plan on opening our registration line until 6:30, but folks started rolling in early (and for once we were ready ahead of time) so we went ahead and started signing up boats around 5:pm and by 8:45 we're pretty much done. When the dust finally settled we had 81 boats registered in this years event. In the next couple days we may pick pick up a few more stragglers. Even if we hold fast at 81, this will be our largest tournament ever!!!!

Many thanks and best of luck to all participants. Your continued support over all these years is greatly appreciated and we hope that you will continue to offer constructive comments and suggestions so that we can continue to "tweak" this event in ways that will always keep it fun (and sometimes profitable!) to be a part of.

Strong gusty winds and rough seas wil likley keep most, if not all the boats off the ocean today, but the forcast is looking a lot better for the next couple days. We'll still be set-up at the weigh station just in case someone did decide to slip offshore. If nothing else we'll probably sell alot of long-sleeve t-and sweat shirts.

Friday 8:21 AM:
To say that yesterday was a nasty day would be an understatement - it was HORRIBLE!! Today the skies are still overcast, but the big flag at the foot of the Rt.50 bridge is no longer standing straight out. In fact, it's barely flipping around at all - that's a good thing. The winds are down, the seas are getting calmer every minute, and by-golly we have a whole gang of fishermen out there doing their thing! The weather forecast for Saturday looks even better. Since no one fished yesterday it looks like we've got a two-day tournament on our hands and it's going to be BUSY at the weigh-ins today and tomorrow.

Saturday 8:30 AM:
A little light rain between 5-6:AM but winds are nill and the ocean is apparently quite calm.

We had a very busy time at the weigh-ins yesterday but overall, things went quite smoothly. As luck would have it, the largest shark of the day didn't arrive until long after (almost) everyone had gone home for the evening. Before the 7:pm weigh-in deadline we received a report that the vessel "Shark Tooth" had a shark to bring to the scales but they had broken down and were awaiting towing assistance. By the rules, the tournament committee has the right to allow an extension of weigh-in time until 12:midnight for such occurrences. The Shark Tooth was towed in to the scales at 11:30pm along with a 335 lb. thresher shark which now holds 1st place in the Open Division. Needless to say, it was a long day (and night) for us all.

I expect that today (Saturday) will be even busier. We certainly hope that all our competitors, along with their family and friends, will join us after the scales close for our evening party under the tournament tent and enjoy lots of good music by "Opposite Directions," great food by our friends at Applebee's, and way too many "fish-stories" about the ones that got away - and a few that didn't!

Hey, while you're obviously on-line right now, why don't' you take a few minutes and click on www.activistcash.com and find out what our "friends" at the Humane Society of the United States are REALLY all about. It's a good read and quite enlightening about this group who is making a lot of money as they push their agenda to take away your right to hunt, fish, trap, eat meat, and darn-near anything else associated with animals. NOOOOO they're not the same good folks that run your local animal shelter, this is a bad organization that misleads the public for their own monetary gain.

To the Humane Society of the United States:

I'd like to take this opportunity to offer thanks to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Even though you obviously know nothing about sharks or shark conservation, you took it upon yourself to fund a media "smear" campaign about our tournament. Thanks to you our tournament has recently received international coverage, and while we would like to claim all the credit for prompting the best OC Shark Tournament turnout in 27-years, we have to give credit where credit is due and know that the HSUS is also partially responsible. Thank you and keep-up the good work.

Hey don't worry, even though you didn't stop the tournament I'm sure that your ultimate goal of raising funds for your organization will be met. There's a lot of people around the world who still know nothing about sharks and shark conservation. I'm sure that when you get done filling their heads with your lies and twisted facts - the checks will start rolling in (I assume you take credit cards as well?) and add nicely to the multi-millions of dollars you already have in your coffers.

Of course if you ever decide to put your fund raising aside and actually try to help sharks, I suggest you do what we have been doing for 27 years and work with State, Federal, and International fishery managers to recognize, address, and correct practices around the world that have severely impacted certain populations of sharks. I'll admit, the process is slow and the meetings probably aren't as exciting as standing in a picket-line, but through the combined efforts of good and dedicated fishery managers, biologists, environmentalists, commercial and recreational anglers we've made some good progress over the years and hopefully some day soon we can get the domestic and global shark problems turned around. It's strange that I've never seen any of your representatives at any fishery meetings. How in the world do you ever explain that to your supporters? Why don't you work through proper channels? Oh yea, I forgot, too busy making posters, protesting against hunters and recreational fishermen, and of course - counting your money.

Well enough about all that, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. I just wanted say "thanks again for your efforts." Even though Mother Nature started us out with some nasty weather this year, it seems that (thanks to HSUS efforts) our anglers had more resolve than ever to get out and catch some fish. I know you're always busy, but if any of you can slip away from the picket line for a little while, please feel free to "come-on-down" to our 2008 tournament weigh-ins. We'd love to meet you, and heck - you might even learn something about sharks!

Sincerely,
Your "buddy" at the "infamous" 27th Annual Ocean City Shark Tournament
