RELEASE
DIVISION
In the past 27 years
the Shark Tournament’s format has varied to reflect changes in fishing
opportunities and to maintain it’s founders commitment to the conservation
of sharks and other marine resources. This has never been a “catch-em,
kill-em, drag-em in” type of event. From the very start the goal
was to have a tournament where most of the sharks were caught and released
and only a limited number of “contender” fish were brought back to the
dock.
The success of their
conservation efforts is something all the tournament directors are very
proud of and certainly a tribute to the sportsmanship of the competitors.
This year’s Shark
Tournament offers cash prizes for the first three heaviest sharks in each
division and to the top three teams who accumulate the most points for
the sharks they release.
In the release division,
sharks that are more difficult to catch - such as makos, threshers, and
great whites - provide more points than more common catches like dusky,
sandbar, and blue sharks. Fishing teams are provided with a camera
to photograph sharks before they’re released. At the end of the
last fishing day, all photographs are processed and used by the tournament
committee to qualify each reported release.
