In case you haven't heard, I've written a book about sharks and shark fishing. Published by "Geared Up Publications" it's only been out since the beginning of June and while the national distribution process is just now getting underway, sales in book stores and tackle shops here on the Delmarva Peninsula have been great and more internet orders are coming in all the time.



About 1/3 of the 258-page book is about sharks with chapters that look at biology, habits, reproduction, senses, and twenty different species of sharks typically encountered on the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The other 2/3 of the book is an in-depth look at shark fishing and has chapters on the history of recreational and commercial sharking, chumming, baits, locations, tackle, as well as techniques for fighting, landing, releasing, tagging, even cleaning sharks and mounting the jaws. Of course, if you know me, you probably already figured that the over-all theme of the book is about "sustainable" shark fishing whereby recreational anglers use techniques and practices that allow them to enjoy the sport of shark fishing without adversely affecting our ocean's fragile and very precious shark resources. I truly hope that Modern Sharking will become a guide that directs the efforts and ethics of shark anglers in the future.

Mixed throughout the book are plenty of short stories that should both surprise and entertain readers with recounts of some of my own experiences during the last 35-years of chasing sharks; from my first shark fishing trip where (as a kid) I used table scraps for chum, to swimming with hammerheads, to watching two drunken bikers in Key West try and skin a bull shark with a pocket knife!

While I'm certain that Modern Sharking will help anyone who reads it to become a better shark fisherman, I also believe that even non-fishermen who have an interest in sharks will find the book both informative and entertaining.
